The Brother HL-L2340DW is a reliable compact laser printer for home or small office use. This desk-friendly, duplex laser printer with an up to 250-sheet capacity tray connects with ease via wireless networking or Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface and prints crisp black and white documents at up to 27ppm‡.
Two of the most important characteristics of a printer are the quality of its’ printouts and the speed at which each page is printed. Brother’s line of laser printers offers both of these features, all for a relatively lower price than you will find with most other laser printers of this class. The Brother HL2270DW steps up its’ level of convenience even more by offering a wireless feature in addition to the other laser printer benefits. Some people might be intimidated by the prospects of a wireless printer, especially if they have ever encountered difficulty setting up a wireless router, but the wireless setup process for the Brother HL2270DW is very simple. Additionally, once you have been able to set up wireless printing with the Brother HL2270DW on one computer, it is even easier to set the printer up with the rest of the computers in your home or office.
Wireless Setup for the Brother HL2270DW
The first thing to clarify when you are performing the wireless setup for this device is that your computer does not need to have wireless capabilities. It simply needs to be connected to a network that has a wireless element. For example, I currently have this printer wirelessly connected to my desktop computer. The desktop computer does not have a wireless network card, but is connected to my wireless router using an ethernet cable.
The next point of clarification is that you will need a USB printer cable for the initial wireless setup of this device. Since the printer does not have a way for you to manually input the settings for the wireless network you will need to apply them to the printer from the computer. Brother also does not include a USB cable with the printer, so you will either need to purchase one or, preferably, use the cable that was connecting your old, wired printer to your computer.
Begin the setup process by unpacking the printer from its’ packaging materials, then removing all of the stickers on the printer. The toner cartridge is already in the printer, but you should take it out and shake it to reposition the toner inside. Replace the cartridge, then close the access door.
Connect the power cable to the back of the printer, then plug it in. Do NOT connect the USB cable yet. You will be prompted to do that later.
Turn on the printer, wait for it to boot up, then press the Go button on the top of the printer to print a test page.
Insert the Brother installation disc into the disc drive on your computer, then click the Setup.exe option in the AutoPlay window. If you do not have a disc drive or you have misplaced the installation disc, you can download the driver software from here.
Click the HL-2270DW button at the bottom of the window.
Click your preferred language from the list.
Click the Installed Printer Driver button at the top of the window. Click the Yes button to allow this program to make changes to your computer.
Click the Yes button to accept the license agreement, click the Wireless Connection option, then click the Next button.
Check the Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer option, then click the Next button.
Choose the option to Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation, then click the Next button.
Click the Wireless Setup option at the bottom of the window. Note that when installing this printer on future computers, your printer will appear on this screen and you will select it from the list.
Click the No option at the center of the next window, then click Next.
Check the box to the left of Checked and confirmed, then click the Next button.
Check the Temporarily use a USB cable option, then click the Next button.
Connect the USB cable from the back of your printer to your computer, then wait for the computer to recognize the printer.
Click your Brother HL2270DW printer fro the list of available devices, then click the Next button.
Click your wireless network from the list, then click Next.
Type your password into the Network Key field, retype it into the Confirm Network Key field, then click the Next button.
Click Next, click Next again, then click Finish to complete the setup. You can then disconnect the USB cable when prompted.

Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Easy setup, runs fine. I have clients who use this printer (and some others of its series), so I knew what I was getting. Seems reliable, decent price.
Cons: It comes with a 'starter' toner cartridge that runs out far too soon. New cartridges are a bit pricey.
Other Thoughts: There's an online seller who provides an inexpensive kit that 'upgrades' the starter cartridge to a standard one by adding a missing part; and the kit includes a full load of toner. It can thereafter be refilled repeatedly and re-used.
The newer version of this printer (HL-L2350DW) uses a different toner cartridge. I found no means to refill or reset its OEM cartridges; which are also about 40% more expensive to buy.

Pros: Nothing DOA
Cons: Did not work for me. Even when test printing it just spit out blank pages. Yes, I put the toner cartage in right.
Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: Was very easy to setup the WiFi. Works really well with both my Mac and PC.
Cons: I have received 3 Windows updates since this printer was purchased, after each update the printer would error out when trying to print anything, the MAC had no problem printing. I had to re-install the drivers to get the printer to work, and as others have stated Brother customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
If this issue wasn't present i would have given it 5 Eggs.

Other Thoughts: The deep sleep problem others have encountered seems to be a non-issue, i can go days without printing anything, and when i do print something it wakes right up and prints.
Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: Fantastic printer, has been nothing but a work horse since I got it. Solid from the construction to the drivers.
Cons: none I can think of
Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
The Product which i have purchase from you its not working properly its just 2 weeks before i made purchases and i want to return this printer to you.2/2/2017 9:44:23 AM
Pros: not good product.
Cons: printing issues we are facing .
Other Thoughts: I won't recommend to anyone.
Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: I am a big fan of Brother printers which are reliable and have low operating costs. This HL-2340DW can operate well with only a power cable connection. I had no problem printing even when it was in Deep Sleep. There is an option to power off after a few hours in Deep Sleep but the default for that was set to off.
The Brother iPrint and Scan app lets you print from tablets and phones directly to this printer without using the internet or clouds. Cloud and internet printing are options, though. It's a free download from your app store.

Cons: I did not like the Brother Windows installer which adds some unwanted apps to your computer.
Other Thoughts: I did the following to connect to an existing infrastructure WiFi, no USB cable needed:
1. Choose WLAN Setup Wizard on the HL-2340DW LCD under Network to turn on its WiFi, find your network SSID and enter your password. Not as hard as it seems but a flashlight helps to read the LCD.
2. Choose Print Settings on the LCD which prints out three pages with the printer IP on page 3.
3. Enter that IP address in your computer internet browser to open the printer settings pages.
4. Here it is easy to set passwords, Continue for low toner etc. I like to set a static printer IP address but that is your choice.
5. Go to Printers in Settings on you computer and choose Add a Printer. To load or update the printer driver, browse to: installdrivergdi32_64BROHL13A.INF on your CD. Just copy the driver folder from the CD to a thumb drive if your computer lacks a CD drive.
Repeat step 5 for each other computer on the network that needs access to the printer.

Pros: Fast, good print quality, easy wireless setup, small footprint, price. Works in Ubuntu Linux. Advanced options like duplex work good even in Linux.
Cons: None that I have seen.
Other Thoughts: Driver install in Linux was easy, no issues. Same for Win10. Once I decided to follow the directions wireless was easy to setup. I thought I could wing it, but you HAVE to go through the steps in the wizard on the control panel. Once I did that setup took just a few minutes.
I have seen better print quality on other laser printers, other more expensive printers, but there is nothing wrong with the print on this thing. For the price there is absolutely no reason to complain. Would buy again or recommend without hesitation.
